Marine safety signs are used by commercial mariners to alert crew members to working hazards, dangerous cargo, escape routes, type of equipment etc on a ship. Marine safety signs such as hazmat container placards act as a pictorial illustration to aid mariners and increase their level of personal safety on vessels. They are also used to explain different aspects related to the operation and maintenance of a ship. Vessel managers and captains are required to ensure that all crew members are aware of hazards, the nature of the hazard and the measures to be taken to protect themselves onboard ship. Furthermore, some flag states and regulatory organizations require marine safety signs on board to be in compliance with the maritime governing regulations. It is imperative that commercial mariners are able to identify and understand marine safety signs, as they have been known to greatly help in preventing accidents from taking place on ships.
