Why it matters
The ISM Code has been mandatory under SOLAS chapter IX since 1 July 1998. Every company and ship it applies to needs a documented safety management system, a Document of Compliance for the company and a Safety Management Certificate for each ship. Resolution MSC.428(98) asks administrations to make sure cyber risks are addressed in safety management systems no later than the first annual verification of the company's Document of Compliance after 1 January 2021.
Who uses it
Shipowners and operators, designated persons ashore, masters and officers, internal and external auditors, flag administrations and maritime training providers.
