The Markus Emergency Ladder are 2 or 4 mesh wide man overboard (MOB) recovery ladders designed for all types of leisure boats and workboats. These ladders allow an individual in the water to pull the ladder down and climb back onboard without assistance – critical for solo sailors or small crews.
They are suitable for a freeboard/fixing lengths ranging from 0.5 to 11 meters (1.6 to 36.1 feet). For effective use, the ladder must extend at least 1 meter (3 feet) below the waterline. If mounted higher, a person overboard may struggle to access or climb it.
For enhanced safety – especially when sailing alone, with children, or with elderly crew members—the ladder should be mounted midship on the outside of the vessel, with the handle positioned no more than 70 cm (2.3 ft) above the waterline. This ensures the MOB can reach the handle, deploy the ladder, and climb onboard safely.
To determine the correct ladder length, measure from the intended fastening point to the waterline and add 1 meter (3 feet).
