Vessels sailing under the Indonesia Country Flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community. Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible to ensure that each vessel in their respective fleets have the appropriate flag signage onboard to be in compliance. This flag is used to identify the flag state a vessel is sailing under and to communicate with other vessels under the provisions of the International Code of Signals.

The Indonesia Country Flag is represented by a bicolor background consisting of two, equally proportioned horizontal stripes. The top stripe is colored red and the bottom stripe is colored white. The Flag was officially adopted in 1945. It is designated to hold a proportional ratio of 2:3, height to length, respectively. The Indonesian Country Flag is officially proportioned to a ratio of 2:3, height to length. The red color is said to represent the human body, while the white is meant to symbolize the spirit, or ethereal human. These colors, taken together are intended to represent a complete human being. The Indonesia Country Flag has roots believed to date back to the 13th Century. It was flown by nationalists in 1922 as activists in the Indonesian population began to fight for independence from Dutch rule. 1928 saw a resurgence of the use of the Flag on the Island of Java. The Dutch government subsequently refused to recognize Indonesian independence until the year 1949, four years after the end of World War Two and the official adoption of the Flag.
