Vessels sailing under Argentina flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community. Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible to ensure that each vessel in their respective fleets have the appropriate flag signage onboard to be in compliance. This flag is used to identify the flag state a vessel is sailing under and to communicate with other vessels under the provisions of the International Code of Signals.

The flag of the Argentina is made up of three colored equal stripes that are aligned horizontally. The stripe on top is a light blue band clear from end to end. It is followed by a white band of the same size that has a golden emblem at the center which stands for the sun (the Sun of May). The sun has 32 wavy rays all round which alternate on each other. The third strand is a light blue band that is also plain from end to end. The light blue is a symbol for the sky above representing when the country’s national independence took place. It is said that the dominant blue color in the flag represents the River of Silver (Rio de la Plata) which is the widest river all over the world and the white color symbolizes the silver metal believed to be hidden along the banks of the River. Relatively, the colors of the flag are said to represent the nation’s ties with Bourbon Dynasty owing that Argentina was colonized by Spain before its birth.
