Vessels sailing under Tanzania Country Flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community. Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible to ensure that each vessel in their respective fleets have the appropriate flag signage onboard to be in compliance. This flag is used to identify the flag state a vessel is sailing under and to communicate with other vessels under the provisions of the International Code of Signals.
The Tanzania Country Flag, adopted in 1964 is a black bar stretching diagonally from the upper fly corner to the lower hoist corner. It is bordered with a gold trim. The upper hoist side is filled with a light green background that forms a triangle against the black and gold bar, while the lower fly side is represented with a light blue background triangle. Green is meant to represent the lush vegetation in the country, while blue represents the many lakes, rivers and the Indian Ocean which borders the eastern coastline. The black bar represents the native Swahili people and gold recounts the rich mineral deposits this country holds. The Tanzania Country Flag is described in dimensions of 2:3, height to length, respectively.
