This two-volume series on Bridge Resource Management (BRM) provides a comprehensive guide to both the human and technical elements required for safe and efficient vessel operations.
Volume 1 focuses on the human factors that build effective bridge teams, emphasizing leadership, communication, trust, and shared understanding. Volume 2 expands into the technical side, covering voyage planning and the management of systems, information, and equipment to support decision-making and prevent errors.
Together, these volumes update and replace Bridge Team Management (2003), offering a modern, integrated approach to BRM for maritime professionals, training centers, and ship operators.
Detailed Overview Vol. 1
Bridge resource management (BRM) is a philosophy and practice that enables bridge teams to complete a voyage safely and efficiently. Building a functional team from a group of strangers is not automatic; exercising good leadership, establishing trust, empowering members to speak up and sharing mental models do not happen by chance. These skills must be practiced and proactively managed if BRM is to succeed.
Complementary to IMO Model Course 1.22, this volume explores the factors that enable people from diverse backgrounds to work well as a team, drawing upon their unique capabilities and alert to their vulnerabilities as human beings. Featuring contributions from multiple experts, this book provides essential insights into the soft skills and knowledge needed to navigate safely, fully aware and in control.

Together, these two volumes expand upon and replace The Nautical Instituteās Bridge Team Management (2003) and are as welcome on the bridge as they are on the bookshelf of any Bridge Resource Management training center or shipmanagerās office. The new series embeds the principles of bridge team management within the more encompassing scope of bridge resource management.
