IMDG Code e-Learning

IMDG Code training became mandatory from 1 January 2010 for all shore-side staff involved in dangerous goods transport by sea. Exis has developed a cost-effective training tool, in collaboration with the International Maritime Organization, which enables shore side sectors to receive high quality training that complies with the IMDG Code training requirements.

Shore side staff requiring IMDG Code training include:- shippers and forwarders, container packers and consolidators, shipping line operations and booking staff, stevedores and port staff.

IMDG Code e-learning is available for the web or as SCORM content packages for integration into a company’s own Learning Management System (LMS).

The SCORM content packages are developed to the SCORM 2004 standard (3rd edition) making use of the sequencing and navigation features. The course requires Flash Player 8 or higher. All course navigation is within the SCORM package.

There are four levels of Amendment 36-12 training and a specific Freight Forwarders course.  

General Awareness Course

General Awareness training is for staff not directly involved in the day-to-day transport of dangerous goods by sea but who require an overview and familiarisation of the IMDG Code provisions.

Additional modules that can be taken: 

49 CFR module - looks at the additional requirements in 49 CFR when shipping into/from the USA under the IMDG Code provisions

ADR module - looks at the additional provisions and/or variations applicable to the road legs of a combined road/sea journey

Function Specific Course

Function Specific training for staff directly involved in dangerous goods transport. The course can be configured according to the student's job role following the functions identified in the IMDG Code training recommendations.

·          Marking, labelling or placarding dangerous goods
·          Packing/unpacking containers
·          Preparing transport documents for dangerous goods
·          Offering dangerous goods for transport
·          Accepting dangerous goods for transport

·          Preparing dangerous goods loading/stowage plans
·          Loading/unloading dangerous goods into/from ships
·          Carrying dangerous goods in transport

Freight Forwarders Course

The Freight Forwarder course is specifically tailored to freight forwarders at a function specific level.  As freight forwarders may have different roles this course identifies the main generic tasks and provides:

  • General awareness overview on classification provisions and the nine hazard classes
  • Information on competent authority approvals and exemptions
  • Detailed overview on labelling and marking provisions for packages and the placarding and marking provisions for CTUs
  • General awareness overview on stowage requirements
  • Detailed overview on segregation requirements
  • General awareness overview on emergency response
  • Information on use of and packing CTUs

The elements in this module focus on:

 - Providing an introduction and overview of the 49 CFR regulation

- General conditions for the use of the IMDG Code when shipping to or from the United States

- Requirements for specific materials and packages when shipping to or from the United States

- Additional requirements when using the IMDG Code when shipping to or from the United States

Refresher Course

he Refresher course is for those who require a refresh on the IMDG Code provisions and details on the latest Amendment update.

Students can refresh their Amendment 35-10 IMDG Code training to Amendment 36-12.

Optional 49 CFR module

As of April 2010, IMDG Code e-Learning includes an optional 49 CFR module to add on to the IMDG course. This is essentially a two-for-one: at the end of the course, students will have a certificate for IMDG training as well as 49 CFR (vessel) training.

Certifications

IMDG Code e-Learning has been certified to meet training requirements by:

  • The Australian Maritime Safety Administration (AMSA) (certificate number AP5101)

  • The Ministry of PI Land Transport & Shipping, Mauritius


IMDG Code e-Learning has been assessed and certified against the DNV (Det Norske Veritas) Standard for Certification of Learning Programmes. This certifies that the course has met the DNV standard for the quality of development, content and delivery; is properly designed; contains clear objectives; is designed by qualified trainers; and is assessed and improved in line with market demands and experience.


The course is updated with every new edition of the IMDG Code and is also updated for errata and user feedback as required.
