Colección: IMDG Code

If you handle or ship dangerous goods by sea, the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code is your rulebook for safety and compliance. Published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the Code is updated every two years to reflect new regulations, new substances, and best practices in maritime transport.

The latest version, the IMDG Code 2024 Edition (Amendment 42-24), is now available. It can be used voluntarily starting 1 January 2025 and becomes mandatory on 1 January 2026. If your business ships hazardous materials, now is the time to get ahead of the changes by upgrading to the new IMDG Code 2024.

Key Updates in the IMDG Code 2024 (Amendment 42-24)

The IMDG Code Amendment 42-24 introduces important revisions that impact classification, packaging, documentation, labeling, and stowage of dangerous goods at sea. Here are some of the most significant updates:

1. Transition Timeline

  • Voluntary use: 1 January 2025
  • Mandatory compliance: 1 January 2026
  • Previous edition valid until: 31 December 2025 (IMDG Code 2022, Amendment 41-22)
  • This transition period gives shippers and freight forwarders time to prepare.

2. New UN Numbers and Substances

  • Sodium-ion batteries added under Class 9 (including vehicles powered by sodium-ion batteries).
  • New entries for fire suppressant dispersing devices, disilane, gallium in manufactured articles, and more.

3. Revised Definitions and Provisions

  • New definition: degree of filling (important for tank filling limits).
  • Revised definitions for recycled plastics and intermediate bulk containers (IBCs).

4. Special Provisions (SPs)

  • SP375 clarifies exemptions for certain environmentally hazardous substances (UN 3077, UN 3082).
  • Updates extend to sodium-ion batteries where lithium provisions previously applied.
  • New provisions for carbon and activated carbon shipments.

5. Packaging & Tank Instructions

  • New packing instructions P303 and P912.
  • New tank provision TP42 for certain water-reactive liquids.

6. Documentation & Labeling Requirements

  • Labels for sodium-ion batteries now mirror lithium battery requirements.
  • Documentation for carbon shipments must include production and packaging dates plus packaging temperature.
  • New requirement: a certificate must accompany cargo benefiting from exemptions under special provisions.

7. Stowage & Segregation

  • New stowage codes (e.g. SW31) to separate certain water-reactive substances from ignition sources.
  • Carbon shipments explicitly added to stowage/handling rules for Class 4 substances.
