Vessels sailing under the St. Kitts and Nevis / St Christopher Country Flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community. Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible to ensure that each vessel in their respective fleets have the appropriate flag signage onboard to be in compliance. This flag is used to identify the flag state a vessel is sailing under and to communicate with other vessels under the provisions of the International Code of Signals.

The St. Kitts and Nevis / St. Christopher Country Flag is recognized as a black stripe trimmed in gold set diagonally from the lower hoist, or left side of the flag to the upper fly, or right side. Two white stars adorn the black stripe, each offset from the center toward either side. The background is filled with a red color at the lower side of the black stripe and toward the fly side, and a green color above it toward the hoist side. The red color is meant to pay tribute to the tribulations of the native peoples as they endured years of slave trade and eventually won freedom from enslavement. The green background represents the fruitfulness of the nation, the abundant vegetation and growth. The yellow band recalls the plentiful sunshine they enjoy, while the black stripe shows the proud African legacy of the region. White stars represent the two entities, St. Kitts and Nevis. They are intended to demonstrate the autonomy and trust shared by the people who live there.
