The Blundell Harling flat acrylic ruler is a long, clear straightedge for chart work and drawing. It's made from clear acrylic so you can see the chart underneath, and it's divided in both millimetres and inches.

At a glance

Product Flat acrylic ruler
Maker Blundell Harling (England)
Length 1 metre (about 39.4 in)
Material Clear acrylic
Scales Millimetres on one edge, inches on the other

Features

  • Clear acrylic: the chart, grid lines and soundings stay visible under the rule
  • Parallel lines along its length to help line the rule up with grid lines on the chart
  • Millimetres on one edge and inches on the other

Why a long rule matters on charts

A short rule can't join two points far apart across a full-size chart sheet, so the line has to be drawn in pieces and errors creep in. A 1-metre rule lays off a long course line, a clearing line or a range in one stroke.

Who uses it

Navigators and cadets at the chart table, and anyone doing technical drawing who needs a long, clear straightedge.

Is this ruler 36 inches or 1 metre?

It's 1 metre long, which is about 39.4 inches.

Is it marked in inches and millimetres?

Yes. Millimetres run along one edge and inches along the other.

Can I use it instead of a parallel rule?

It's a straightedge, not a parallel rule. Use it to draw long lines, and use a parallel rule or plotter to carry a course to the compass rose.
