Vessels sailing under the Spain Country Flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community. Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible to ensure that each vessel in their respective fleets have the appropriate flag signage onboard to be in compliance. This flag is used to identify the flag state a vessel is sailing under and to communicate with other vessels under the provisions of the International Code of Signals.

The Spain Country Flag is represented as a series of three horizontal stripes. Two red stripes, one on bordering the top and the other bordering the bottom sandwich a yellow stripe that is double their width. The Spanish Coat Of Arms adorns the flag and is aligned left of center, squarely in the yellow stripe. Atop the Coat Of Arms lies the Spanish Royal Crown. The Coat Of Arms is defined as a shield with four quadrants and a blue circular symbol in the middle. The quadrants contain a castle tower on the upper left, a blue lion on the upper right, yellow and red vertical stripes on the lower left and an oval, spoked design on the lower right. Two Promontories rise, one to either side of the shield and a red ribbon is loosely wrapped around each, tying them together. These represent Gibralter and Ceuta, the Pillars of Hercules. The yellow strip is meant to represent generosity, while the red stripes dignify bravery, strength and hardiness. The Spain Country Flag has dimensions of 2:3, height to length.

History

The modern Spain flag design originated in 1785 when King Charles III commissioned a new naval ensign to distinguish Spanish vessels from other European powers. The red and yellow design represented Spain's heraldic colors and became popular with Spanish naval forces.

Queen Isabella II declared it the official national flag in 1843, establishing red and yellow as Spain's permanent national colors. During the Second Spanish Republic (1931-1939), the lower red stripe was temporarily replaced with purple, but the original design was restored in 1938.

After Spain's transition to democracy, the current official flag was established by Law 33/1981 on October 5, 1981. The Spanish Constitution of 1978 defined the flag as "three horizontal stripes—red, yellow and red, with the yellow stripe being twice the width of each red stripe."

Spain Flag Meaning: What Do the Colors on the Spain Flag Mean?

Red Stripes: The red represents Spain's royal heritage and has been significant in Spanish heraldry for centuries, symbolizing valor, strength, and sacrifice.

Yellow Stripe: The yellow represents tradition and continuity in Spanish history. Yellow appeared prominently in the coat of arms of Spain's historic kingdoms. The yellow stripe's dominant width (equal to both red stripes combined) emphasizes its importance in Spanish identity.

The red and yellow color scheme was officially established in 1785 to differentiate Spanish vessels from other kingdoms' flags.

Spanish Coat of Arms: The coat of arms features a shield with four quarters representing Spain's major historical kingdoms: Castile (gold castle), León (purple lion), Aragon (red and gold stripes), Navarre (gold chain), and Granada (pomegranate) at the base. The coat of arms includes the House of Bourbon crest, Pillars of Hercules with "Plus Ultra" (Further Beyond) motto, and a royal crown symbolizing the constitutional monarchy.

Civil Flag vs. State Flag

Spain maintains two official flag versions: the state flag with coat of arms (required for maritime vessels) and the civil flag without coat of arms. Maritime vessels must display the state flag with a complete coat of arms.

Maritime Requirements

Vessels sailing under the Spain Country Flag are required to have this flag on board as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community.

Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible for ensuring each vessel has appropriate flag signage onboard to maintain compliance. This Spain flag identifies the flag state a vessel is sailing under and communicates with other vessels under the International Code of Signals.

Spain-flagged vessels must comply with both international maritime conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, IMO regulations) and Spanish maritime authority requirements. Proper flag display and maintenance are compliance matters subject to Port State Control inspection.
