Bridge resource management (BRM) is a philosophy and practice that enables bridge teams to complete a voyage safely and efficiently. Building a functional team from a group of strangers is not automatic; exercising good leadership, establishing trust, empowering members to speak up and sharing mental models do not happen by chance. The second volume addresses technical aspects of Bridge Resource Management: voyage planning and the management of systems, information and equipment that allows for shared mental models, timely interventions and the avoidance of failure. Together, these two volumes expand upon and replace The Nautical Institute’s Bridge Team Management (2003) and are as welcome on the bridge as they are on the bookshelf of any Bridge Resource Management training center or shipmanager’s office. The new series embeds the principles of bridge team management within the more encompassing scope of bridge resource management.
