With 40% of the UK P&I Club’s outgoings caused by cargo damage, the Club considers cargo advice extremely important. The Carefully to Carry manual is a comprehensive publication, for use onboard vessels and ashore, highlighting the importance of following some of the general principles of the carriage of cargo. The aim of this manual is to assist the Member to follow Hague Rules Article III, Rule 2 “The carrier shall properly and carefully load, handle, stow, carry, keep, care for and discharge the goods carried”. It includes articles, written by experts in their field, on subjects frequently connected with the Club’s cargo claims, e.g. sampling bulk cargo, container crime, cargo pre-loading surveys and testing weather-tight integrity of dry cargo vessels’ hatchcovers. To ensure this publication remains a market leader a Carefully to Carry Committee, which consists of shipping experts from all areas within the maritime industry, meets regularly to review new, old and ongoing cargo claim trends. The book is divided up into 5 sections: bulk cargoes - solid; bulk cargoes - liquid; containers; miscellaneous; and refrigerated cargoes. The manual was published in 2002 after all reports were checked and updated.
